Originally established as Mercy College, it became a four-year institution in 1961 and received accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 1968. Over the years, Mercy University has grown significantly, becoming an independent, nonsectarian, and coeducational institution. The university has continuously expanded its campus, doubled its facilities, and initiated numerous community outreach programs.
